 | |  |  |  | | Advanced Placement US History |  | Course Description: AP US History is a college-level course that provides students with the analytic skills and systematic factual knowledge to deal critically with the problems and materials in U.S. History. Students will have extensive practice assessing historical materials for their relevance to given interpretive problems, their reliability and their importance through weighing the evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship. This course will equip students with the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of informed judgment and to present their reasons and evidence persuasively in essay format. Students will gain systematic factual knowledge through a survey approach to the material, centered around major themes.
Standards:
· use analysis and factual knowledge to deal critically with the problems and materials in U.S. History around political institutions, social and cultural developments, diplomacy, and economic trends · think conceptually about the American past and focus on historical change over time through the study of broad themes and topics in U.S. History · assess historical primary and secondary source materials for their importance, reliability and relevance to a given interpretive problem · evaluate evidence and interpretations presented in historical scholarship · develop the skills necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of informed judgment · present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in analytic, interpretive and thematic essay formats
