MINNEAPOLIS (November 17, 2008) – Twenty-two students from St. Paul Arlington High School BioSmart Program recently visited the University of Minnesota.
The visit was organized by the U of M Institute of Office of Diversity and Outreach, whose mission is to promote academic excellence in engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics with a focus on underrepresented populations. The Office of Diversity and Outreach has developed pre-college, undergraduate, and graduate/faculty initiatives designed to empower students to perform academically at peak level and to increase the number of students from underrepresented populations who earn degrees in these disciplines.
During their visit, the Arlington students learned how to build radio-controlled cars under the guidance of outreach coordinator Richard Pollard and senior aerospace engineering student Halftom Dessalegn. The students also toured the U of M Civil Engineering Department.
The visit by the Arlington students was one of many outreach efforts Pollard and the Office of Diversity and Outreach host during the school year. Contact: Richard Pollard, 612 625-2348
